What started as an idea between Steve and Jennifer Lieberman in 2014, has blossomed into a two-location brewery with the community in each location at the core. While both locations offer their own cuisine, style, and culture, both locations offer delicious Surfridge beer, a welcoming atmosphere, and a nod to local history.

Back in El Segundo, Croxall went to work in the aerospace industry starting at TRW Inc., where he was business manager for a group of engineers working on satellite designs. As the years spooled out and defense companies merged and folded, Croxall found work at companies with big government contracts including Hughes, Boeing and Northrop Grumman.

To his surprise, beer aficionados converged to sample the brews of what was then only the sixth independent beer production company in Los Angeles County. (Today there are more than 90 independent brewers.) Croxall was also pleased to learn that he could sell pints of beer poured in his own tap room for as much as $7, compared with about $1.25 wholesale. He added a proper tap room to the brewery, where customers now sip beer a few feet away from tall fermentation tanks and bottling equipment.

Luckily, El Segundo Brewing Company, known for its award-winning West Coast IPAs, found the perfect person to bring onto their team. Someone with a bit of history on the canvas, Professional Wrestling Hall of Famer 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin. Since 2015 the two have partnered to make Steve Austin's Broken Skull IPA and introduced Broken Skull Lager in 2022. By leaning on each of their respective strengths, this duo has thrived. Their success has helped propel El Segundo to the top of the heap in the Los Angeles market, their hometown, where they are one of the largest independent brewers.

When Croxall founded El Segundo in 2011, the craft beer market was entering its golden growth phase. According to the Brewers Association, there were 2252 craft breweries in the United States in 2011; that number sat at 9247 by 2021. Even though California was a hot spot for craft breweries, Los Angeles was a bit of a 'beer wasteland' according to Croxall. San Diego and San Francisco were where all the action was at for drinkers. LA, known for its endless beaches and laid-back vibe, only had five independent breweries.

It turned out that Austin had been thinking about launching a beer for decades. According to him, in 1998, he was close to launching one, Stone Cold Beer, during the heart of his professional wrestling career, but that fell apart at the last minute. A beer lover himself, Austin's matches were infamously rowdy affairs where numerous brews were cracked open, and the liquid would end up soaking the canvas, fans, and other wrestlers in the ring. One would have thought that a major brewer would have reached out to partner with one of the most popular wrestlers on television, but he was a bit too rowdy back then, according to Austin.

Riding on the positive momentum that Broken Skull generated from day one, El Segundo has steadily increased their presence in their home market and across the country. They brew 11,000 barrels annually, almost half of which is Broken Skull, and have distribution in 35 states. The revenue and name recognition that Broken Skull brings to the brewery has been crucial to its continued success. It has insulated them from recent market changes that have adversely affected the craft beer industry.

Today, though, brewing is front and center for the 40-year-old Croxall, a married father of two children who founded the El Segundo Brewing Co. at 140 Main St. The business in May turned out its first batch of beer and in September added a tap room for public tastings.

Coincidentally, it sits across from Rock & Brews at 143 Main St., the beer garden owned by hotelier Michael Zislis and business partners Dave Furano, a former concert tour promoter, and Gene Simmons of the rock band KISS. Rock & Brews announced this week it would reopen April 3 following a renovation and expansion project.

El Segundo Brewing started sending beer to the Portland-area in 2016, but the supply quickly dried up. Beginning second week of November, El Segundo is back in Oregon via Day One Distribution. The Steve Austin aligned brewery is in the South Bay-area of Southern California and makes a popular beer called Broken Skull IPA with the popular ex-professional wrestler Austin."We know its been a bit too long, so apologies," so writes El Segundo's Thomas Kelley. "Steve Austin kinda blew our brewery up over the summer. Good problems to have certainly, but don't love leaving y'all hanging without our super fresh hop bombs!" A new collaboration from El Segundo Brewing with HopSaint Brewing of Torrance, California. South Bay Bubble is a West Coast IPA with Sultana hops (formerly Denali), Citra, Centennial, El Dorado, and Idaho 7. Pilsner malt keeps the color on this beer light and it has a small percentage of Maris Otter malt for subtle complexity. South Bay Bubble has loads of tropical and bright citrus flavors. South Bay Bubble is in cans but is draft-only for now in Oregon.
