So how much are you looking at spending? A rebuild may cost you between $2800 and $3800 depending on labor, parts, and unforeseen circumstances. A rebuilt transmission is still relatively cheaper than a new one, which could cost between $4,000 and $8,000 depending on the make and model of your vehicle.

When it comes to cost, labor is the biggest factor to consider when rebuilding a transmission. Experienced transmission rebuilders may average two common transmission rebuilds a day, but more complicated transmissions may take a full day to rebuild. Exotic and European models also add more time to the process given their complexity and specialty components.

While several options are available to replace a broken transmission, they each come with their own set of pros and cons. Purchasing a used transmission is no different in this respect. Used transmissions are defined as complete units salvaged from a donor car, often a wrecker that still has working parts. We're writing today to address why you might be tempted to purchase a used transmission instead of installing a new, rebuilt, or remanufactured one, as well as the risks of used transmissions that might cause you to reconsider that option.

Used transmission are perhaps most tempting because they tend to come at a much lower price than new, remanufactured, or rebuilt units. By purchasing a used transmission, you can come in under budget. Depending on where you purchase a used unit, it might come with a short, 30-day warranty (if any warranty at all). For a consumer just trying to get their car back on the road quickly, a used transmission might be a good short-term solution, but as you'll see in the next section, the benefits of a used unit for a transmission shop just about end after the cheap price.

Almost all of the disadvantages of used transmissions stem from the fact that it's difficult to know the exact history of the unit and how it was maintained. While it's not always easy to find a used model of the same application you need to replace, even the right unit from the wrong source will only cause future issues for the customer and reflect poorly on your shop. First and foremost, it takes a lot of work to verify if a supplier is trustworthy. You have to be cautious because used transmissions could be stolen or otherwise deceitfully sold. Most also come "as-is," often meaning the unit hasn't been tested at all.

Used transmissions can come with an unknown cocktail of mechanical problems, from shifting problems, contaminated fluid and issues with torque converters or cooling systems, faulty or worn parts (especially internally), or missing or incorrect parts that prevent reinstallation. Beyond physical parts, it's almost impossible to know for sure if a used transmission has been maintained or serviced poorly over its lifetime. It's also impossible to predict how many more miles are left in a used transmission. For these reasons, used transmissions don't make a great long-term solution as transmission replacements.

Your shop is far more likely to see successful transmission replacements and happy customers when you opt for rebuilt and remanufactured transmissions instead of used units. (While new units off the shelf are also available, they can be pricy, and sometimes lack newer transmission technology that wasn't available when it was built and packaged for sale.) With rebuilt units, you complete the service yourself in house, replacing all the worn parts in the original transmission and reinstalling it into the vehicle. With a rebuild, you know exactly what quality of work and parts go into the unit, and you can test it yourself before it leaves the shop. Alternatively, purchasing a certified remanufactured unit, while at a higher cost than a used transmission, has been completely refurbished and can be installed into vehicles with the same application. With either of those options, your shop can complete the service without much less worry about comebacks, failures, and unsatisfied customers.

On paper, used parts sound like a good idea. They often cost less than new or remanufactured transmissions, and they solve an immediate problem. Install one of these, and you can be back on the road under budget.

A remanufactured transmission is often the best possible deal with all factors considered. They cost a little less than new transmissions but are just as reliable. They also typically have parts guarantees provided by companies with reputations to protect. When you compare the cost per mile of driving, a remanufactured unit is the best value in the long run.

When our AAMCO master technician rebuilds your transmission, there's no fear of a defective replacement unit. And because it is rebuilt using the original unit by an on-site expert technician, you know it's right! He'll completely disassemble your transmission, rebuild it with quality parts, thoroughly clean and inspect your transmission's internal and external components, reinstall your transmission, refill the fluid, make any external adjustments and road test to ensure all of the problems you noticed prior to AAMCO's service are corrected. You get peace of mind that your transmission has been rebuilt to AAMCO's exacting quality standards and backed with a nationwide warranty.

When searching online for a replacement transmission, most vehicle owners do not realize that there are many benefits to buying a remanufactured transmission. Remanufactured transmissions are nearly identical in performance to a new transmission. Therefore, no matter what you drive, we can offer you a superior product at an affordable price.

For both transmission replacement services, once your unit is installed or reinstalled, our on-site AAMCO Fremont, CA technician will refill the fluid, make any necessary external adjustments and road test your vehicle to ensure all of the problems you noticed prior to AAMCO's service are corrected. You get peace of mind that your transmission has been rebuilt or replaced to AAMCO's exacting standards that is over 50-years strong and is backed by the strongest nationwide warranty in the business.

NEW PARTSJASPER remanufactured transmissions receive a standard set of new and qualified parts. Their standard parts replacement assures smooth, consistent performance and long unit life. JASPER remanufactured transmissions are assembled by skilled technicians many of whom are ASE Certified and who specialize in particular models or families.

DYNAMOMETER TESTINGEvery JASPER domestic automatic reman transmission is dynamometer tested with recorded inspections to shift patterns and shift pressures. A stall test, fluid leak test, lockup test (as applicable) and park test are performed. Tests are made at varying RPM's and at full and closed throttle positions. Standard transmissions are tested at the work station for proper gear engagement as well as for gear and bearing noise and proper engagement of the shift rails into the detents.

QUALITY CONTROLConsistent quality is maintained through a continuous training program of ASE technicians backed with statistical process control. Technicians are also JASPER Certified to specific transmissions and job functions. Weekly disassembly of a production transmission is also performed. All areas of the transmission are scrutinized for cleanliness, surface finishes quality, lubrication, clearance and wears patterns.

You may want to have a rebuild over a replace because it can cost less because it is not done on the factory level. Also, often times it is known that having it done in a factory setting does not necessarily mean that all the parts are brand new from the manufacturer. You are simply having a different type of mechanic replacing the parts. In most cases, brand new transmissions are only done when new cars are produced.

For nearly 50 years, AAMCO Centers have become the trusted experts in the diagnosis, service and maintenance of transmissions. Call AAMCO first. Before starting any repair, we will perform our extensive TranScan diagnosis on your transmission. 041b061a72
